Henry Steggles was born in Isleham (Newmarket Q2-1883 3B:599), son of James and Caroline STEGGLES (née KING).

1891 census...Aged 7, he was at St John's Square, Soham with his father James STEGGLES [58] shoe maker born Thurston, Suffolk; his mother Caroline [41]; brothers William T[9] and Charles [5]; sister Sophia [4]. All except his father were born in Isleham.

1901 census...Aged 17, a farm labourer, he was at Station Road, Soham with his widower father (now retired and on relief), brothers William (farm labourer) and Charles (groom) and sister Eliza [14] housekeeper.

1911 census...He had emigrated to Canada. He appears to be the Hy Steggles aged 21, single, labourer, on "Dominion" leaving Liverpool for Quebec on 189th April 1906.
His brother William James was at Padney Farm, Wicken with his wife Fanny Eliza and children William Charles [3] and Caroline [8 months], except for William senr all born in Soham.


The 58th Canadian Battalion (9th Brigade, 3rd Canadian Division) were bombing west along Zollern Graben in conjunction with an attack on it by the 43rd Battalion (Cameron Highlanders of Canada). The Germans later drove them back. CWGC records 54 of the battalion killed on 21st September, only 11 with known graves.

The Canadian archives do not have the circumstances of death cards after "Si" and so far Henry's service record has not been digitised and put on line. All that is available is Canadian Archives RG150, accession 1992-93/166 box 9265-24:-
Henry Steggles attested on August 6th 1915 at Brandon, Manitoba. He gave his date of birth as 27th May 1884, in Soham, Cambs, England [none of which is correct, he was born in Isleham, his birth was registered as Q2-1883]. Next of kin Wm Steggles (brother).
He was single, a farmer 5 feet 7 inches (171.5 cm) tall, chest 34" to 36" (86.4 to 91.4cm), grey blue eyes, light hair,Wesleyan. He was posted to the 79th Overseas Battalion. Not only are there so few personal details, the war diaries of the 43rd battalion for that time are not available yet on line, the only reference being that above and the sketch map below.
